Introduction
The ODU (Outdoor Unit) of VSAT earth station acts as the front-end transmit & receive hub for the whole satellite communication system. Many beginners confuse the functions of feedhorn, LNB and BUC upconverter: the feedhorn collects and radiates electromagnetic waves; LNB serves as the core of the receive chain; BUC upconverter is the core of the transmit chain. Working together, they complete satellite signal reception, down-conversion, as well as up-conversion and amplification of transmit signals. This article breaks down the task allocation, signal flow and component cooperation logic of ODU transmit-receive links, and clarifies isolation design points for co-located transmit & receive.
1. Basic Component Definition
ODU (Outdoor Unit) is generally mounted at the focal point of dish antenna. It consists of feedhorn, LNB, BUC upconverter and OMT (Orthomode Transducer) to realize integrated transmission and reception.
1.1 Feedhorn
Feedhorn is the electromagnetic coupling component of antenna. On reception: it collects satellite electromagnetic waves focused by dish and feeds into LNB. On transmission: it radiates RF signals from BUC to dish, and the dish shapes the beam toward satellite. It also handles polarization matching (H/V, circular polarization).
1.2 Low Noise Block (LNB)
Low Noise Block, commonly known as LNB, belongs to the receive chain. It amplifies high-frequency satellite downlink signals from feedhorn with low noise, then down-converts to IF (Intermediate Frequency) via local oscillator, and sends IF signal to indoor receiver through coaxial cable.
1.3 Block Up Converter (BUC)
Block Up Converter (BUC) belongs to the transmit chain. IF signal from indoor modulator enters BUC, going through filtering, up-conversion and power amplification. It outputs high-frequency uplink RF signal to feedhorn, then transmitted to satellite via dish antenna.
1.4 Orthomode Transducer
OMT (Orthomode Transducer) is a polarization separator integrated inside feed assembly. It separates transmit and receive signals by polarization, preventing high-power transmit signal from leaking into LNB and causing burnout.
2. Full Signal Flow of ODU Cooperation
2.1 Receive Chain (Downlink: Satellite → Dish → ODU → Indoor Receiver)
2.2 Transmit Chain (Indoor Modulator → ODU → Dish → Satellite)
3. Key Points of Transmit & Receive Cooperation
3.1 Isolation between Tx and Rx
BUC transmit power ranges from several watts to tens of watts, while LNB is a highly sensitive low-noise device. Polarization isolation of OMT plus feedhorn serves as core protection, preventing high transmit power leakage into LNB which causes LNA saturation or permanent burnout.
3.2 Polarization Matching
Transmit and receive normally adopt orthogonal polarization (e.g. H for transmit, V for receive). Besides isolation, it improves spectrum utilization. During commissioning, feedhorn polarization angle must align precisely with satellite transponder; otherwise transmit/receive gain will drop sharply.
3.3 Coaxial Cable Shared IF & Power Supply
Many VSAT ODU systems use a single coaxial cable to carry downlink receive IF, uplink transmit IF, and supply DC power to BUC and LNB. One cable carries both RF AC signal and DC power, simplifying outdoor wiring.
4. Common Engineering Fault Diagnosis
Fault1: Poor reception, normal transmission → Check feed polarization, LNB noise figure, LNB power supply and connection between feed and LNB first.
Fault2: Transmission offline, reception normal → Check BUC power supply, BUC LO, OMT connection and uplink link budget.
Fault3: Receive loss of lock immediately after transmission → Typical insufficient Tx/Rx isolation. BUC transmit power leaks into LNB; inspect OMT and feedhorn assembly.
5. Summary
ODU outdoor unit is the transmit-receive front-end of VSAT satellite communication. Feedhorn collects and radiates electromagnetic waves; LNB performs low-noise reception and down-conversion for downlink signals; BUC upconverter completes up-conversion and power amplification for uplink IF signals; OMT realizes transmit-receive polarization isolation. The four components cooperate to achieve two-way satellite communication. Engineering commissioning focuses on polarization alignment, Tx/Rx isolation and link budget, to prevent high-power BUC from damaging sensitive LNB.
