1.Project Overview
This case is based on an urban commercial satellite reception project, equipped with a 1.2m offset dish antenna, standard civilian DRO-LNB and standard coaxial cable for fixed satellite signal reception. The system worked normally in the initial stage. After 3 months of operation, it suffered from intermittent SNR drop, screen mosaic and random carrier loss. Multiple operations including antenna fine-tuning, standard LNB replacement and cable waterproof rework failed to eliminate the recurring fault.
Site environment: The device was installed on the outer wall of an urban high-rise building. Multiple 5G macro base stations are densely deployed within 500 meters with full-time high-load operation, forming a typical dense terrestrial RF interference scenario.
2. Fault Phenomena
After 72-hour all-weather monitoring, the fault showed obvious regularities, completely different from conventional satellite reception faults:
1. Time regularity: Faults frequently occur during 8:00–22:00 with low SNR and continuous mosaic; signals remain fully stable without dropout in the early morning and night.
2. Weather independence: Faults occur consistently on sunny, cloudy and overcast days, with no change during rainfall, completely ruling out rain fade.
3. Frequency feature: Full-band SNR declines overall, no high-frequency priority failure, excluding LNB high-temperature LO drift.
4. Device independence: Replacing brand-new standard LNBs, recalibrating antenna focus and changing cables cannot solve the problem.
3. Initial Misjudgment & Troubleshooting Errors
The initial troubleshooting fell into 3 typical engineering misunderstandings, which are common problems for most field technicians:
Misjudgment 1: Inaccurate Antenna Focus / Feed Offset
Insufficient SNR margin was initially judged as feed offset and antenna angle deviation. Multiple 3D feed adjustments and antenna calibrations only slightly improved signals but could not eliminate intermittent dropout.
Rejection Basis: Feed offset causes all-weather steady low SNR without day-night difference, inconsistent with the time-based fault feature.
Misjudgment 2: LNB High-Temperature LO Drift
Worsened faults in summer high temperature were initially judged as excessive DRO-LNB thermal drift. However, monitoring showed faults persisted on cloudy hot days and recovered immediately at night, with no high-frequency transponder priority failure, inconsistent with thermal drift logic.
Rejection Basis: LO drift is strongly correlated with ambient temperature rather than base station load, unable to explain day-night fault difference.
Misjudgment 3: Cable Aging & Signal Attenuation
Replacing with new low-loss cables and reworking all F connectors and waterproofing with normal link loss test brought no improvement, completely ruling out line faults.
4. Root Cause Analysis: 5G RF Interference Invading Receiving Chain
Combined with fault time characteristics, surrounding environment and spectrum test, the core root cause was finally confirmed: High-power RF signals from surrounding 5G macro base stations invade the standard LNB receiving channel via antenna sidelobe coupling and spatial radiation.
Complete interference formation logic:
1. Standard LNB has no built-in RF filter and cannot reject adjacent-band 5G signals;
2. Base stations operate at high power with heavy user load in daytime, and strong 5G signals are captured by antenna sidelobes;
3. High-power 5G signals enter LNB, causing internal LNA saturation and intermodulation spurious signals;
4. System noise floor rises sharply, weak satellite carriers are submerged by noise, resulting in SNR drop, mosaic and satellite loss;
5. Nighttime base station load and transmit power decrease, interference weakens, and the system recovers automatically.
5. Graded Rectification Solutions & Implementation
For this strong 5G interference scenario, a two-stage solution of "temporary relief + permanent radical fix" was adopted to restore system stability quickly:
5.1 Temporary Emergency Measures
1. Optimize antenna installation angle to avoid direct line-of-sight with 5G base stations and reduce sidelobe interference;
2. Replace with quad-shield high-isolation cables to strengthen link shielding and reduce spatial RF coupling;
3. Reinforce connector waterproofing and shielding layer to prevent radiation interference from entering the cable link.
Effect: Fault frequency reduced by 30%, but interference still exists during daytime peak hours without fundamental resolution.
5.2 Permanent Radical Solution (Core Rectification)
Upgrade standard DRO-LNB to specialized LNB with built-in 5G rejection filter.
Rectification Principle: A dedicated bandpass filter is integrated at the front-end RF port of LNB to accurately reject 5G interference bands and retain normal Ku-band satellite signals. It blocks 5G signals from entering the LNA amplification chain from the source, completely eliminating amplifier saturation and noise floor elevation.
Implementation Effect: After upgrade, all-day SNR remains stable with no day-night difference. Mosaic and satellite dropout faults are completely eliminated, realizing 24/7 stable system operation.
6. Case Review & Engineering Inspiration
1. For urban satellite reception faults with regular day-night fluctuation, RF interference should be judged first, prior to thermal drift, rain fade and focusing deviation;
2. Standard LNB has no anti-interference capability. Filtered LNB is mandatory for areas covered by dense 5G base stations. Antenna debugging and cable optimization cannot compensate for interference defects;
3. External filters only suppress back-end interference and cannot protect the front-end LNA, which is invalid for strong interference scenarios. Front-end built-in filtering solution is required;
4. Equipment selection takes priority over on-site debugging. Correct hardware selection avoids 80% of hidden RF interference faults.
