Satellite-5G NTN Integrated Site: Full Architecture of LNB + Antenna Receive Unit

2026-10-28

Najnowsze wiadomości o Satellite-5G NTN Integrated Site: Full Architecture of LNB + Antenna Receive Unit

5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) enables the convergence of cellular and satellite communications, delivering wide-area 5G NR services in remote areas without terrestrial cellular coverage. At satellite‑5G NTN integrated sites, the antenna paired with an LNB (Low Noise Block downconverter) forms the RF receive front-end, which serves as the core unit of the receive chain for the NTN ground station. This article breaks down the complete architecture of this receive unit, signal flow, division of functions among key components, engineering design considerations, and the differences from conventional VSAT receiving systems.

01 Overview of Overall Architecture

The receive unit of the NTN integrated site consists of a parabolic dish antenna, feed network, LNB, RF cable, and baseband gateway receiver module connected in series. The antenna collects downlink RF signals from the satellite; the feed couples the concentrated electromagnetic waves into the LNB; the LNB performs low-noise amplification and frequency down-conversion. The converted IF signal is transmitted via coaxial cable to the NTN gateway and finally fed into the 5G baseband unit for demodulation to recover the 5G signal over the NTN air interface.

Note: The NTN receive chain only processes satellite downlink signals. The uplink transmit chain is generally implemented separately by BUC and OMT combiner, isolated from the LNB receive branch.

02 Breakdown of Core Components
2.1 Antenna & Feed

NTN site antennas are typically directional parabolic dishes, providing spatial gain to receive low-power satellite downlink signals. The feed is mounted at the antenna focal point to couple electromagnetic waves and feed the concentrated signals into the LNB.

Key criteria for NTN antenna selection: beam alignment accuracy, operating frequency band (typically Ku/Ka-band NTN downlink), and cross-polarization isolation. Compared with traditional broadcast VSAT, NTN imposes stricter requirements on antenna phase stability and pointing tracking precision. Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) NTN satellites introduce Doppler shift, so the tracking accuracy requirement is significantly higher than fixed satellite broadcast VSAT.

2.2 NTN-dedicated LNB

The LNB is the heart of the receive unit. It integrates a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA), Local Oscillator (LO), mixer and filters.

  1. LNA: The first amplification stage with ultra-low noise figure, which sets the noise floor for the entire receive system.
  2. LO + Mixer: Down-converts high-frequency satellite RF signals to Intermediate Frequency (IF).
  3. Built-in filters: Suppress RF interference from terrestrial 5G base stations to prevent LNA saturation.

Special requirements for LNB in NTN scenarios: tight LO temperature drift and low phase noise. Since NTN carries 5G NR quadrature modulated signals, excessive phase noise will directly raise EVM (Error Vector Magnitude), degrade demodulation performance or even lose synchronization. This is the most critical difference from ordinary broadcast LNBs.

2.3 RF Cable & Gateway Receiver Module

The IF signal travels through low-loss coaxial cable to the indoor NTN gateway. Link budget must account for cable loss; long wiring will reduce receive SNR.

The NTN gateway receiver module performs IF sampling, digital demodulation and synchronization, extracts 5G NTN baseband signals, and interfaces with the 5G core network.

03 Full Signal Flow
Satellite downlink electromagnetic wave → Spatial gain and concentration by parabolic antenna → Feed coupling input → Low-noise amplification by built-in LNA of LNB → Mixer down-conversion to IF → Transmission over low-loss coaxial cable → NTN gateway IF receiver unit → 5G baseband demodulation → Interface with the 5G core network

04 Key Engineering Considerations
  1. Noise budget: The system noise of the whole receive chain is dominated by the LNB noise figure; the LNB forms the noise bottleneck of the link.
  2. Anti-interference: Terrestrial 5G signals easily leak into the front-end and saturate the LNA. NTN-dedicated LNBs with high-performance bandpass filters are mandatory for this application.
  3. Phase noise: NTN 5G signals are sensitive to phase noise. Ordinary consumer-grade broadcast LNBs cannot meet the 5G NR demodulation requirements and cannot be directly deployed for NTN sites.
  4. Polarization matching: Strict polarization alignment is required. Polarization mismatch will drastically reduce received power.
  5. Temperature effect: Outdoor high temperature causes LNB LO drift, introducing carrier frequency offset and impairing 5G signal synchronization.

05 Comparison
Item Satellite 5G NTN Receive Unit Conventional VSAT Receive System
Carried Signal 5G NR NTN quadrature modulated signal DVB-S/S2 broadcast signal
Key Constraints Low phase noise, EVM performance, carrier synchronization accuracy SNR, rain fade margin
LNB Requirement Low phase noise, low LO temperature drift Qualified noise figure with loose phase requirement
Interference Risk High risk of co-channel / adjacent-channel interference from terrestrial 5G Interference mainly from other satellite signals

Summary

The LNB + antenna receive unit at satellite‑5G NTN integrated sites is not a simple reuse of conventional VSAT systems. Built on the 5G NR standard, NTN imposes stricter mandatory specifications for LNB phase noise, LO stability and immunity to terrestrial 5G interference. During field engineering deployment, antenna pointing, polarization matching, link noise budget, front-end filtering and high-temperature LO drift must be systematically evaluated to ensure stable reception of NTN 5G signals.
