Deployment of LNB in VSAT Satellite Terminals: Home Reception, Enterprise VSAT & Satellite Backhaul

Últimas noticias de la empresa sobre Deployment of LNB in VSAT Satellite Terminals: Home Reception, Enterprise VSAT & Satellite Backhaul

VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) refers to small satellite earth station systems. As the core hardware of the receive chain, the LNB (Low Noise Block downconverter) differs greatly in model selection, installation, polarization and power supply schemes across different use cases. This article covers three typical scenarios: home satellite reception, enterprise VSAT private network and carrier satellite backhaul, breaking down LNB deployment essentials, hardware selection rules and engineering considerations.

01 Home Satellite Reception
Scenario Features

Antenna aperture is generally 0.45m~0.6m, a small receive-only terminal for one-way satellite TV signal reception with no transmit function. 0.7~0.9m dishes may be used in regions with severe rain fade. The equipment prioritizes low cost, simple setup and plug-and-play operation.

LNB Deployment Essentials
  1. Single-output or Twin dual-output LNB is widely adopted, supporting H/V polarization switching. The satellite receiver supplies 13V/18V DC over the coaxial cable to select polarization.
  2. Fixed local oscillator frequency, typical Ku-band LO at 10.75GHz. High LO stability is not required, with loose tolerance for temperature drift.
  3. Installation: Mounted at the feed focal point and aligned to the target satellite. A Monoblock integrated LNB can be used for multi-satellite reception, eliminating the need for a DiSEqC switch.
Limitations

Receive-only with no transmit path. Poor immunity to 5G interference; a filtered LNB is recommended for urban deployment.

02. Enterprise VSAT Private Network
Scenario Features

Antenna aperture ranges from 0.8m~2.4m, supporting two-way communication (receive & transmit) for enterprise private networks, site interconnection and emergency communications. It carries IP data with bandwidth on demand, subject to strict requirements for link stability and SNR. The core transceiver components of the outdoor unit (ODU) consist of an LNB (receive path) + BUC block upconverter (transmit path), paired with an OMT orthomode transducer and feedhorn.

LNB Deployment Essentials
  1. High-performance Ku/Ka-band professional LNB is preferred with low Noise Figure (NF) and tight LO temperature drift specifications to ensure reliable all-weather communication.
  2. Integrated ODU: The LNB and BUC share the feedhorn / OMT orthomode transducer to separate transmit and receive signals, using a single dish antenna for both directions.
  3. Power & cabling: The coaxial cable carries both RF signals and DC power. For engineering wiring, cable loss must be controlled; low-loss coaxial cable is selected for long cable runs.
  4. Polarization: Fixed or remotely switchable polarization. For multi-carrier services, industrial-grade LNB with built-in RF filters is recommended to avoid RF interference from nearby 5G base stations.
Typical Use Cases

Internet access for retail chains, private networks for mining and offshore platforms, backup emergency communication links.

03 Carrier Satellite Backhaul
Scenario Features

High-bandwidth two-way VSAT with antenna aperture of 1.2m~3.0m, deployed for cellular base station satellite backhaul and communications in remote areas. This is carrier-grade service operating 24/7 with the most stringent performance requirements. Within the full ODU transceiver assembly, the LNB acts as the front-end of the receive path.

LNB Deployment Essentials
  1. Carrier-grade high-precision LNB with ultra-low noise figure and minimal LO temperature drift. Frequency offset must be tightly constrained under extreme hot and cold temperatures to prevent carrier loss-of-lock.
  2. High transmit-receive isolation is required. Strict matching between OMT, feedhorn, LNB and BUC is mandatory to prevent high transmit power leakage from the BUC, which would saturate the LNB front-end LNA.
  3. Interference mitigation: For urban / suburban deployment, 5G interference protection is a mandatory requirement. LNB with built-in bandpass filters is standard equipment to reject terrestrial mobile RF signals.
  4. Telemetry capability: Supports remote monitoring of LNB operating temperature, supply voltage and signal level, integrated into the carrier network management system for fault alarms.
Business Objective

Provide backbone backhaul links for terrestrial cellular base stations and stable communication services in remote regions where fiber deployment is not feasible.

Comparison Table
Item Home Reception Enterprise VSAT Carrier Backhaul
Antenna Aperture 0.45~0.6m (0.7~0.9m for severe rain fade) 0.8~2.4m 1.2~3.0m
Communication Mode Receive-only Two-way Two-way
LNB Grade Consumer grade Industrial grade Carrier grade
LO Stability Requirement Low Medium Very high
5G Immunity Filter optional Filter recommended Filter mandatory
Remote Monitoring None Optional Required

Summary

LNB is not a universal component; selection must match the VSAT service scenario. Home deployments prioritize low cost and simple installation. Enterprise VSAT focuses on all-weather link stability. Carrier satellite backhaul requires full carrier-grade specifications for noise floor, LO drift, interference rejection and remote monitoring. Improper selection directly results in insufficient SNR, loss of lock caused by LO drift under high temperatures, and LNA saturation induced by terrestrial 5G RF interference.
