Custom Ruggedized Marine LNB Solution for Inmarsat Satcom-On-The-Move Antenna

2026-10-30

Tin tức công ty mới nhất về Custom Ruggedized Marine LNB Solution for Inmarsat Satcom-On-The-Move Antenna

Vessels at sea are exposed to constant rolling motion, salt spray corrosion and drastic temperature cycling. Standard commercial LNBs are prone to local oscillator drift, RF performance degradation and housing corrosion failure under such conditions. This solution provides a purpose-built ruggedized LNB matched for Inmarsat satcom-on-the-move antennas (FleetBroadband / GX). It fits the compact space inside the antenna radome and satisfies marine mechanical, anti-corrosion and RF stability specifications, ensuring continuous satellite reception throughout the voyage.

1. System Architecture

The receiving chain comprises a reflector antenna, feed assembly, ruggedized marine LNB, phase-stable coaxial cable and below-deck satellite modem. The antenna servo tracker continuously points toward the target Inmarsat satellite. RF signals are coupled via the feed into the LNB for down-conversion: Ka-band GX and L-band FleetBroadband signals are separately converted to standard L-band IF output. Inmarsat does not offer Ku-band services. The IF signal is delivered through low-loss phase-stable cables to the below-deck modem for demodulation.

2. Specialized Ruggedization Design for Shipborne Use

1.Structural and Anti-Corrosion Design

The housing is made of aluminum alloy with conductive anti-corrosion coating. Its hermetic sealing achieves an IP67 rating. IP67 is a static ingress rating; seal ageing should be inspected periodically for long-term marine deployment. It passes the IEC 60068-2-52 cyclic salt spray test. PCBs are coated with conformal coating to block condensation and salt particle ingress. 316 stainless steel RF connectors are adopted with isolation protection to mitigate galvanic corrosion risk between dissimilar metals.

2. Vibration and Shock Resistance

The vibration-damping structure is optimized for vessel roll, pitch and engine-induced vibration. It complies with EN 300 019-2-6 for marine telecom equipment and meets the general environmental requirements of IEC 60945 for shipborne communication devices. It withstands sustained random vibration and transient shock, reducing solder joint failure, oscillator disturbance and suppressing signal phase jumps caused by vibration.

3. Wide-Temperature LO Phase Stabilization Design

A built-in TCXO covers the operating range of -40℃ ~ +70℃ and stabilizes LO frequency within rated temperature limits while suppressing phase noise. OTM terminals move continuously with the vessel, resulting in constantly changing Doppler shift. Low phase noise from the LNB is essential for reliable carrier lock and low bit error rate.

3. Key RF Specifications
  • Operating band: Matched to Inmarsat downlink bands (L-band / Ka-band)
  • LO thermal drift: ≤ ±200 kHz over full temperature range (typical for GX; ≤±100 kHz preferred for FleetBroadband L-band). This only accounts for intrinsic LO drift of the LNB and excludes Doppler shift from vessel motion
  • Phase noise: ≤ -85 dBc/Hz @1 kHz offset (typical for L-band FleetBroadband; better than -90 dBc/Hz @1 kHz offset required for Ka-band GX)
  • Noise figure: ≤1.2 dB typical for L-band FleetBroadband; 1.6~2.2 dB typical for Ka-band GX
  • IF output: Standard L-band IF (typical range 950–2150 MHz; exact IF plan depends on terminal vendor implementation)
  • Power supply: 13V / 18V via IF coax (standard for FleetBroadband; some ruggedized Ka GX LNB models support separate DC supply). Power interface is compatible with OTM ACU
4. Installation & Compatibility Notes

The LNB mounts directly behind the antenna feed. Its form factor fits inside the original radome without extra bracket modification. Polarization angle calibration is required during installation. Marine-grade phase-stable cable is mandatory for the IF link between the LNB and below-deck modem. Conventional RF cables introduce phase drift under temperature variation and bending, which may trigger antenna tracking loss-of-lock.

5. Application Scenarios

It applies to Inmarsat broadband satellite terminals deployed on ocean cargo vessels, fishing boats, offshore engineering platforms and marine patrol ships equipped with Inmarsat service. It supports FleetBroadband and Global Xpress high-speed maritime satellite services. Replacing standard commercial LNBs helps improve link availability under rough sea conditions.

6. Conclusion

For Inmarsat satcom-on-the-move systems, LNB performance is judged not only by RF specifications, but also long-term reliability in harsh marine environments. This purpose-built ruggedized LNB is optimized for corrosion resistance, vibration tolerance and wide-temperature LO stabilization. Paired with Inmarsat OTM antennas, it resolves frequent field issues including thermal drift, corrosion and vibration-induced loss of lock, and reduces the operational expense of shipborne satellite communications.
