Understanding Satellite Components
What is an LNB?
An LNB (Low Noise Block) or LNC (Low Noise Converter) is used for communications satellite reception. Mounted on the satellite dish, it collects and amplifies satellite signals, then down-converts them to manageable IF frequencies for transmission over coaxial cabling to the receiver. Available in C-Band, Ku-Band, and Ka-Band frequencies.
What is a feedhorn?
The feedhorn is a directional component of the LNB that captures signals reflected from the dish while shielding against extraneous radiation. It passes collected signals to the LNB electronics. Available in orthogonal feed, offset feed, and elliptical feed configurations.
What is a C-Band Single LNB?
  • C-Band: Receives radio frequency range 3.4-4.2 GHz
    • Lower frequency than Ku-band (10-12 GHz)
    • Better signal penetration through rain/weather
    • Requires larger satellite dishes (1.8-3 meters typical)
  • Single: Has only one output and one local oscillator (LO)
    • Can only connect to one receiver at a time
    • Cannot feed multiple receivers simultaneously
  • LNB: Low-Noise Block Downconverter
    • Converts high satellite frequencies to lower frequencies
    • Amplifies weak satellite signals with minimal added noise
How It Works
Signal Flow:
Satellite Signal (3.7 GHz) → LNB Reception → Mix with LO Frequency (5.15 GHz) → Output IF Signal (1.45 GHz) → Cable to Receiver
Technical Process
  1. Receives weak C-band signals from satellite (3.4-4.2 GHz)
  2. Uses internal local oscillator (typically 5150 MHz) to downconvert
  3. Outputs Intermediate Frequency (IF) = LO - Satellite Frequency
  4. Result: 950-1750 MHz range that can travel efficiently through coaxial cable
Example Calculation
Satellite frequency: 3720 MHz
LNB LO: 5150 MHz
Output to receiver: 5150 - 3720 = 1430 MHz
Advantages
• Low cost
• Simple installation
• Reliable for basic use
• Widely available
